Letters to the editor: On those who sacrificed for the country

While Trump thinks nothing of disparaging our military, I ask that you continue to thank them for serving our country.
Energy diversification a must
With the political season looming over us as November approaches, there have been a lot of oil and gas opinion articles published, and I am already getting sick of it. There’s a growing misconception that being pro-oil and gas means you’re Republican and that being pro-renewable energy means you're a Democrat. But that couldn't be further from the truth.
I know many people in both parties that are tired of our dependence on oil and gas and want to move toward other options because we have future generations coming into this world that will need to have their infrastructure and energy demands met. This is a common growing concern because we already don’t meet them with our current population.
Energy generation is more than a political partisanship battle on how to vote, but something that directly affects our future residents. Sure, we can keep building our oil and gas industry. But what happens when our population grows? Or when oil and gas hits another low like in the 70s, 80s, 90s, ‘08, ‘14, and this past year? Or when we finally run our wells dry? It’s no longer a political game, we need more stabilized energy sources with infrastructure to help us move into a better future.
Make ballot drop boxes a priority
Our country is so polarized that even the faithful execution of our elections has become a divisive issue. This year, some politicians aren’t just attacking each other -- they’re attacking our nation's democratic institutions. That isn’t just wrong; it’s dangerous.
Fortunately, Secretary of State Toulouse Oliver is on the right track. She’s recommended that county clerks set up drop boxes that are both secure and accessible for all eligible voters across the state. Now, we need our clerks to spring into action.
Drop boxes must be an immediate priority for clerks in all 33 counties. It’s clear that this election will be different from anything we’ve ever experienced. But amid all the potential chaos, drop boxes are one of the most reliable and tested options we have available.
Drop boxes allow voters to fill out a ballot at home, and then safely deposit it to a secured location. They remove all questions about losing something in the mail, and they give voters an option that could help shorten lines at in-person polling locations.
The playbook is out for
Vote safely, but please vote
The importance for all Americans to vote cannot be overstated. It is our privilege and right to vote for the candidates who we believe will maintain our freedom and rights as citizens.
This year, we will be voting in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.
If a politician wants to be elected, he or she must convince the older voter, not the younger voter, that he or she is the right candidate for the job.
In the last two elections, it was voters age 50 plus that determined those races. In 2016, 53 percent of the electorate was 50 plus; in 2018, 59 percent; and the same will decide who wins in the 2020 election.
AARP New Mexico’s goals are to ensure that voters can vote safely from home or in-person, and to make our voice heard in matters that affect the 50 plus : protecting

Masks are personal choice
Responding to
Evidently COVID-19 is going to be sticking around for a good while. That's exactly why people should be out talking, laughing and having a great time with or without a mask. Masks should have always been an individual choice. It's time to end Gov. Lujan-Grisham's ridiculous restrictions on life.
Don't ignore pandemic
In today’s paper (9/8) I saw the picture of the Republican leadership at the Women for Trump rally. They were indoors standing very close to each other and none wore a mask.
This election is literally a matter of life and death. Elect a Republican and the death toll will continue to rise.
