Letters: Right to bear arms comes with responsibilities
New Orleans Advocate, The (LA)
An article from Insurance Business magazine on April 22 is worth noting. It says, "Under the new legislation, which is slated to start on Jan. 1, 2025, all gun owners in Colorado will be required to hold liability insurance that covers losses or damages resulting from the accidental or unintentional discharge of a firearm."
Many years ago, on the Opinion page, there was a letter advocating citizen gun insurance. Clearly, someone in Colorado listened or came to the same realization of the only sane way to address the gun carnage this country is enduring.
With rights come responsibilities, a statement that we all know in our hearts as true and necessary.
It is past time our legislators acknowledge the responsibilities that gun owners must accept that come with their right to bear arms. What thinking person can fail to see the correlation between the responsibility of a car owner/driver and a gun owner/bearer?
Our legislators rightly strive to protect our constitutional freedoms. They should also strive to enforce our responsibilities.
