Larson to design height increase for Hospital Run levee
Daily Item (Sunbury, PA)
May 17--DANVILLE -- Larson Design will do the engineering work for raising of part of the levee at Hospital Run as required by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Danville Borough Council members approved the $29,250 cost at their meeting May 3.
The work will be paid for with capital reserve funds and an H20 state grant, said Jamie Shrawder, borough administer of governmental affairs.
The H20 funds were previously awarded to the borough with a grant that included the dike closure project, she said.
Part of the Hospital Run flood protection system levee will be raised to meet requirements for certification by the federal government.
Two areas don't meet absolute minimum freeboard requirements of two feet for certification.
Each of the two areas not meeting requirements includes a stop-log structure which will also have to be raised.
Certification is measured by freeboarding or the difference between the 100-year flood stage and elevation at the top of the levee. At least two feet of freeboard is required for the Danville system.
The levee system is evaluated every 10 years.
Dan Knorr, former administrator of governmental affairs for Danville, previously said residents living along a certified levee system do not need flood insurance.
