Jim Carlin shares his views in U.S. senate race

JJ PetersKalona News

Kalona

Jim Carlin of Sioux City is running for U.S. Senate, challenging Representative Ashley Hinson in the Republican primary. Carlin previously served in the Iowa Senate, representing the 3rd District from 2017 to 2023 after winning a special election against Todd Wendt following the resignation of Bill Anderson.

A Republican, Carlin officially announced his Senate campaign in April. He says he plans to focus on issues including housing, manufacturing, healthcare, education, and economic growth if elected.

Before entering politics, Carlin ran the Carlin Law Office in Sioux City, where he specialized in malpractice and injury cases for 34 years. He met his wife, Donna, who was his first client. Carlin and Donna have three children, and he served in the U.S. Army from 1983 to 1985.

During a recent conversation with the News in Kalona, Carlin discussed topics affecting Iowans, beginning with housing.

He explained that Federal Reserve policies have contributed to rising home prices. Since 2019, home prices have increased about 60%, and the average first-time homebuyer is now 39 years old, compared with the early 30s in previous years. "The housing market has been shaped by Federal Reserve policies," he said. "Where first-time homebuyers used to be in their early 30s, the average age is now 39. Home prices have risen roughly 60% since 2019, influenced by factors like quantitative easing and mortgage-backed securities."

Carlin also spoke about healthcare costs, noting that insurance companies now play a larger role in determining care. "Since the Affordable Care Act was implemented, insurance premiums for many people have increased significantly. Physicians often need pre-authorization for various tests and treatments, which can affect costs and access to care," he said.

Education, particularly student loans, was another focus. Carlin said that federal student loans are the primary option for most students, and both interest rates and loan balances have increased in recent years. Many borrowers now take decades to repay loans, which can make planning for home ownership, starting a family, or accessing healthcare more challenging. "Repaying student loans can take a long time, which can affect life planning for young adults," he said.

Carlin also discussed his opponent, Ashley Hinson, and her positions on certain social issues. He said, "I would not have voted the way she did on marriage. Additionally, many people have concerns about developments in public schools, including changes to facilities and activities. There have been intended and unintended outcomes, but I still would not have cast my vote in that manner." Carlin describes himself as an "America First" candidate, focusing on policies that prioritize U.S. interests.

On public education, Carlin outlined his approach emphasizing academic instruction and parental involvement. He supports policies aimed at providing age-appropriate learning while allowing families to have input on what their children are taught.

Economically, Carlin stressed the importance of supporting Iowa farmers and domestic manufacturing. "Local industries and farming are vital to the state's economy," he said. He highlighted challenges such as market consolidation and rising costs and said he supports measures that encourage fair competition and help strengthen local businesses and agriculture.

Carlin also addressed energy policy, stating that domestic production can contribute to economic stability and lower energy costs. He praised past initiatives that expanded energy production and emphasized the need for reliable and sustainable energy resources.

Technology and social media were topics as well. Carlin noted that while technology and innovation bring many benefits, there is value in balancing screen time with family and community activities. He also discussed artificial intelligence, suggesting it can be a helpful tool if used responsibly, without replacing personal connections and critical thinking.

Throughout the conversation, Carlin emphasized his experience and record in the Iowa Legislature as evidence of his ability to serve at the federal level. He encouraged voters to consider his past work on economic, education, and healthcare policies when evaluating his campaign.

Carlin concluded by highlighting his focus on supporting economic growth, family involvement, and policies that prioritize Iowa communities. "I want to continue serving the people of Iowa by focusing on practical solutions to the challenges our communities face," he said. He encouraged voters to review his record and consider his campaign platform when casting their ballots for U.S. Senate.
