Inmate charged with setting fire in cell

A 19-year-old inmate has been charged with intentionally setting a fire at the Maryland Correctional Institution for Women in Jessup this week.

Haley Elizabeth Biser, a Frederick woman who is serving a two-year sentence for assault, is accused of setting items on fire inside her cell, causing the evacuation of inmates and staff and requiring medical treatment for five correctional officers for smoke inhalation.

The fire broke out at about 8:40 p.m. Sunday, and was extinguished within minutes.

Biser is charged with first-degree arson, second-degree arson, malicious burning and possession of contraband in a place of confinement. She continues to be held in state custody.

BALTIMORE

Fired executive sues Under Armour

A former vice president for Under Armour has filed a lawsuit against the firm seeking at least $3.14 million, saying he was wrongly terminated and has been denied access to his stock in the company.

Tom Walsh, who joined the Baltimore apparel company in 2008, says in a filing in Baltimore Circuit Court that he was let go without explanation in early August. He held the title of vice president for global store development.

In the lawsuit, Walsh says he was "not given any prior notice or warning of termination written or otherwise."

He also says the company has improperly withheld his access to $785,000 in stock options.

Under Armour spokeswoman Kelley McCormick Jenkins said the company would not comment on pending litigation.

Walsh says in the lawsuit that his position has not been filled, and that he believes he was let go as part of the company's recent restructuring that saw "legacy executives" cut.

MARYLAND

Two state stores among

80 that Sears is closing

The owner of Sears announced plans Friday to close 80 stores, including two in Maryland, amid a looming bankruptcy deadline.

Sears Holding Corps. listed the Parkville Kmart and the Salisbury Sears among the 80 locations scheduled to close by late March 2019. The Sears' auto center in Wicomico County is scheduled to close in January.

Employees learned of the decision Thursday. Liquidation sales at the stores are expected to begin in two weeks.

BALTIMORE

Tuxedo Pharmacy to close after eight decades

Brothers Harold and Arnold Davidov will close their family business, Tuxedo Pharmacy on Roland Avenue, on Jan. 8.

It's hard to own an independent pharmacy in 2018, they say, thanks to declining reimbursement from insurance companies and a growing web of regulations.

But it was a hard choice. Four generations of Davidovs have worked behind the Tuxedo Pharmacy's counters. And four generations of Baltimoreans have relied on the store for their medicine during its 82 years in business.

The business will merge with the CVS on Falls Road.
