IWHC to Join Women’s March on Washington

NEW YORK, Jan. 12 -- The International Women's Health Coalition issued the following news release:

The International Women's Health Coalition (IWHC), a group that advances the sexual and reproductive health and rights of women and young people globally, is joining the Women's March on January 21st as an official partner.

"With the new Trump Administration, the US is now positioned to join a growing bloc of countries that seeks to reverse the international consensus on sexual and reproductive health and reproductive rights," said Francoise Girard, President of IWHC. "We join this historic Women's March on Washington to send the unequivocal message that we are watching the Administration. We stand ready to defend the global gains made on behalf of women and girls over many years of struggle."

Policy proposals and statements made during President-elect Trump's presidential campaign--along with the egregious anti-choice records held by his current cabinet nominees--indicate that reproductive rights will be severely challenged under a Trump Presidency. The United States is one of the largest contributors of foreign assistance to women and girls globally; a backsliding of US leadership on women's sexual and reproductive rights--and an unwillingness to provide women and girls globally with the full complement of reproductive health education and services--could have devastating global consequences. A US retreat from supporting women and girls could lead to increases in early and forced marriage, unintended pregnancies, unsafe abortion, and sexually transmitted infections.

The International Women's Health Coalition stands ready to march in solidarity with our sister organizations everywhere to promote and defend the human rights and health of women and girls worldwide.
