Imprivata Helps Hospitals Combat Patient Misidentification with Expanded Workflow Integrations and Launch of Technology Adoption Program

Journal of Engineering

By a News Reporter-Staff News Editor at Journal of Engineering -- HIMSS Booth #747-Imprivata®, the healthcare IT security company, announced that it has expanded Imprivata PatientSecure®, the leading positive patient identification platform for healthcare, to include broad technology integrations and adoption processes that help hospitals address the patient misidentification crisis. Imprivata PatientSecure now offers self-service patient registration workflows through an expanded partner ecosystem, identity verification at every point of care, and a new adoption program focused on driving high utilization with proven strategies for success.

Patient misidentification has become rampant in healthcare and carries significant consequences that negatively impact patient care and the hospital's financial performance. A recent study from The Ponemon Institute found that the primary cause of patient misidentification is errors made at registration. Beyond registration, the misidentification problem compounds at high risk points of care, where up to 30 percent of medical errors including radiation overdoses, surgical errors, blood transfusion errors, and medication errors are the direct result of patient misidentification.

"Imprivata has helped us to prevent the significant clinical and financial problems which result from patient misidentification," said Jim Turnbull, CIO at University of Utah Health Care. "The combination of Imprivata's technology, integration, and patient adoption process allowed us to enroll more than 10,000 patients in our first 30 days of go-live, far exceeding our expectations."

Today, Imprivata PatientSecure is extending technology integrations to self-service registration via leading registration kiosks including Connected Technology Solutions (CTS), Vecna, and PatientWorks. Through integration with every ADT and EHR system for patient registration and points of care across the enterprise, Imprivata PatientSecure enables organizations to ensure positive identification is directly embedded within their technical environment and workflow, without requiring a heavy burden on IT or manual integration work.

"While technology is critical in solving the patient misidentification crisis, it needs to be combined with a proven adoption strategy to ensure that patients are identified successfully each and every time," said Carina Edwards, Senior Vice President of Customer Experience at Imprivata. "Imprivata is dedicated to customer success, ensuring customers achieve rapid ROI for our solutions. Our proven approach allows customers to be confident in their implementation by utilizing our tools and best practices to get their patient identification programs up and running."

Adoption of positive patient identification relies heavily on the hospital's ability to drive education, awareness, and acceptance across staff and patients. To drive high adoption, Imprivata today launched the Imprivata PatientSecure Customer Adoption Program, a unique adoption methodology with customized success strategies tailored for each and every health system, as an integral part of its deployment methodology and post-deployment success planning. With this level of dedication to customer success, Imprivata customers such as Carolinas Health System have achieved more than 2.7 million successful identifications in 2016.

Imprivata PatientSecure is the positive patient identification platform for healthcare that eliminates patient misidentification at any point of entry or care and positively identifies patients to improve patient safety, increase revenue capture, and prevent identity theft. Imprivata PatientSecure will be on display this week at the HIMSS17 Conference and Exhibition (February 20-22, 2017 in Orlando, Florida) in Imprivata booth #747 and in Imprivata HIMSS theater presentations including the "One patient, one record: ensuring health record integrity across the continuum of care" panel. About ImprivataImprivata®, the healthcare IT security company, provides healthcare organizations globally with a security and identity platform that delivers authentication management, fast access to patient information, secure communications, and positive patient identification. Imprivata enables care providers to securely and efficiently access, communicate, and transact patient health information to address critical compliance and security challenges while improving productivity and the patient experience.
