Hurricane Dorian: Storm draws Trump tweet on Bahamas and one on … Alabama?

Palm Beach Post (FL)

Hurricane Dorian's violent, relentless two-day pummeling of the northwestern Bahamas has drawn one tweet from President Trump, which was issued on Sunday

But it was an earlier one that day that included Alabama on the list of states in peril that resulted in a back-and-forth between the president and meteorologists.

On Sunday afternoon, the president tweeted: "Pray for the people in the Bahamas. Being hit like never before, Category 5. Almost 200 MPH winds."

-- Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 1, 2019

Other than that, Trump has been silent on Dorian's unprecedented, drawn out assault on the international neighbor just to the east of Florida. He has tweeted frequently on the China trade war, the economy and media criticism since Dorian first made landfall in the Bahamas on Sunday.

Last March, the president met with the Bahamian prime minister along with the leaders of Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, Haiti and St. Lucia at his Mar-a-Lago club.

The goal of the afternoon summit, the White House said at the time, was to thank the countries for supporting "peace and democracy in Venezuala," discuss potential energy investment and "counter China's predatory economic practices."

Trump and meterologists, however, have also exchanged Twitter salvos over the president's tweet that the storm would impact Alabama.

In addition to Florida - South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama, will most likely be hit (much) harder than anticipated. Looking like one of the largest hurricanes ever. Already category 5. BE CAREFUL! GOD BLESS EVERYONE!

-- Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 1, 2019

Trump's Sunday morning social media missive that included Alabama on the states that would be affected by the storm was refuted by meteorologists, including those from the Birmingham, Alabama branch of the National Weather Service.

Alabama will NOT see any impacts from #Dorian. We repeat, no impacts from Hurricane #Dorian will be felt across Alabama. The system will remain too far east. #alwx
