High-speed police pursuit ends in crash

Nov. 23--VIVIAN -- A Fort Pierre man was arrested Monday for allegedly leading police on a chase in Lyman and Stanley counties while in possession of methamphetamine.

At about 5:30 p.m., a law enforcement officer attempted to stop a maroon Hyundai sedan with loud exhaust on Vivian's Main Street, recognizing it as a vehicle that had fled from a Stanley County sheriff's deputy earlier that day.

Rather than stopping, the driver, 29-year-old Cory Glatt, accelerated and went north onto 293rd Avenue, leaving Vivian. Glatt reportedly drove up to 90 mph on gravel roads, failed to stop at the intersection of 222nd Street and U.S. Highway 83, crossed the median and drove north in the southbound lanes at speeds of up to 105 mph.

According to court documents, Glatt at one point crossed into Stanley County and went into a ditch, then went onto War Creek Road before entering the Fort Pierre National Grasslands through a gate. He went through a fence to get back onto the road, then through the fence again to re-enter the grasslands.

About 30 minutes after the chase began, the sedan reportedly crashed and stalled.

When police searched the vehicle, they reportedly found a small metal container, inside of which was a bag containing a powdery white substance that Glatt said was methamphetamine. Glatt's license was also found to have been revoked, and no proof of insurance was present.

Glatt was transported to the Brule County Jail, where he waived his Miranda Rights and told police that he had used methamphetamine earlier that day and had eaten the last of his methamphetamine when he crashed. He tested positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine.

Glatt is charged with possession of a controlled substance in schedules I or II, aggravated eluding, reckless driving, driving with a revoked license, failure to maintain financial responsibility and driving without a proper exhaust and muffler system.
