Hays County to host Emergency Preparedness Fair on Sept. 11

Hays County's office of emergency services will host its annual Emergency Preparedness Fair from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 11 at the Hays school district's Performing Arts Center, 979 Kohlers Crossing.

Attendees will have a chance to take classes, learn how to make a preparedness kit and hear from experts about how to be ready to face emergencies. They can also learn about the county's emergency alert system, talk to first responders and find out more about the Community Emergency Response Team.

Classes to be offered at the fair include Stop the Bleed (tourniquets), Citizen Response Active Shooter Events; CPR take 10, FireWise (Wildland Fire Home Preparation), Standard Response Protocol and business and school response for sheltering in place and evacuations.

Vendors will offer ideas about everything from insurance coverage to financial issues after a crisis to knowing what documents to take in case of an evacuation.

NAMI Central Texas will host a free virtual event on the science and neurobiology of substance use disorders and toxic stress at 11 a.m. Aug. 25.

The free event will be held to better understand common behaviors associated with those experiencing addiction and alcoholism, particularly in early recovery. Rachel Garner from the Right Step Hill Country & Promises Austin will present a neuro-sequential approach to treatment and interventions to better support individuals in early recovery from addiction, alcoholism and trauma.

TAYLOR

The city of Taylor will host Charles Marohn, author and founder of the Strong Towns movement, in the first stop on his book tour in a special event from 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 30 at the Taylor Public Library, 400 Porter St.

Marohn will give a presentation on his latest book, "Confessions of a Recovering Engineer: Transportation for a Strong Town." Marohn, who kicked off the city's comprehensive planning process in the fall of 2020, is the founder and president of Strong Towns, a group advocating for a radically new way of thinking about the way cities are built.
