Final individual health insurance market rates are projected to save Michiganders an estimated $250 million compared to insurers' requests
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: November 6, 2025
(LANSING, MICH) Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) Director Anita Fox are kicking off the annual Health Insurance Marketplace open enrollment period by reminding Michiganders that free local assistance is available to help them get the insurance coverage they need. Open enrollment began on November 1, 2025, and runs through January 15, 2026.
Ongoing federal uncertainty and other factors are contributing to higher insurance rates. In response, Governor Whitmer and DIFS took action to protect consumers, resulting in final approved rates that are projected to be $250 million less than what health insurers requested. According to data from KFF, Michigan is expected to have the seventh-lowest benchmark health insurance rates in the nation in 2026.
"In the face of ongoing uncertainty, we have been proactive in Michigan to ensure Michiganders have access to health insurance that helps them get and stay healthy," said Governor Whitmer. "We will continue to work in a bipartisan manner to manage costs and protect Michiganders' coverage for pre-existing conditions and other essential health benefits. During this Open Enrollment period, I encourage Michiganders to explore all their options and find a plan that meets their needs."
