Getting Fit
Asia
You might recognize Asia Ford from a news story that went viral last March. She was struggling to finish the Rodes City Run 10K when a
What's the most-asked question you get from people about your weight loss?
"The most common question is, 'How did you do it? What kept you motivated?' I always tell people that your motivation is going to be different from mine, but not to quit, because that's always been my hardest thing. I've always struggled with my weight. I bet you by the time I was 13 or 14, if I wasn't already 300 pounds, I was pushing it. I could lose maybe 30 or 40 pounds but never maintained it. It wasn't until, unfortunately, hardship hit my family and I had to remember that God didn't put my kids on this earth by themselves. I'm here as their advocate, so I have to live not only for myself but for them too. So I use my kids as motivation."
You've also changed your diet quite a bit. What's been the biggest thing you've learned about healthier eating?
"Take out the carbs. I was so used to spaghetti and chili with the noodles when you could actually do spaghetti and chili with spaghetti squash instead, or you can remove mashed potatoes and you could use mashed cauliflower."
You post a lot of motivational sayings on Facebook and Instagram. What's your favorite?
"I'm worth it."

What motivates you to keep climbing?
"I love that climbing takes you so many places. I love traveling, and I get to see the most beautiful places climbing that I've ever seen. And there are so many facets to it. It's not just (about getting) physically fit, but you're also challenging yourself and working through things like fear and problemsolving."
How is the climbing community different from another type of active community?
"I feel like with (climbing) you create a little bit more of a bond, because you're climbing but you're also hanging out. Obviously, you can't be climbing the whole time because you get exhausted. You're not just enjoying the sport together, but you're also kind of learning about people and creating friendships. It's a little bit broader than, 'We run and then we're done and we disperse.'"
Any tips for new climbers?
"A lot of times, people think they have to be really strong: 'I have to be really strong, and I have to yank myself up the wall.' But think about where your feet are going and just slowing yourself down. Sometimes when I get on the wall, and I'm able to climb really slowly, it's like everything else is gone. It's my stress reliever, almost."

How long have you been a cyclist?
"I've been a bike commuter since kindergarten when I started biking to school. I've never had a driver's license. When I was 15, my dad took me and my brother on a summer cross-country bike trip. That was around the time when all my friends were getting drivers' licenses. I was like, 'I can bike across the country; I think I can get to school.' I love it because it's my fitness program. I don't have to worry about anything else. Now that I'm older, it's something I do every day that's fun. I feel like a kid again. I don't know why you wouldn't do it. Yeah, some days it's raining or cold, but if you just get in a habit of it, it doesn't feel like a burden on those days."
What should cyclists keep in mind when they commute on the streets?
"In
Do you have any tips for new cyclists or people who want to start commuting on a bike?
"You can start with very little money. You can commute with a backpack or a milk crate. And route planning is really important. Not going the same way you would go in a car is probably the best thing to do. It makes such a difference when you're on a nice neighborhood road versus

The 25-year-old has certainly put In the work: Her Instagram account, the_southern_yogi, has 114,000 followers, who've watched her progress from basic poses to acro-yoga and beyond. Her first e-book, Ab'Asanas, was released in late 2015, and her income from the book and her socialmedia work (along with, she says, a supportive husband) allowed her to quit her job at
How is yoga different from other sports you've done?
"I went into yoga with an athlete's mindset. But It transforms you from the inside out. When I swam, I was on that team to go to the
Do you follow a particular eating plan or diet?
"Everything in moderation, that's what I live by. Even Nutella."
What's the best thing about being Insta-famous?
"Knowing that I could go anywhere in the world and have a friendly face to greet me. I love knowing that wherever I go there's a friend I haven't met yet. It just blows my mind. I just try not to take it for granted. Like if Instagram would go away none of this would even matter, you know?"
What's the worst thing about being Instafamous?
"The latest and greatest is that my eyebrows are very offensive to people. It's literally the dumbest thing, because I don't, like, clip them or wax them. I just let them grow out, and they do grow down my nose and people just...give me a heyday about it."
Dunn, 14, is an eighth-grader and currently ranked first in the country for middle school cross country in the 3K at
Mow'd you become such a great crosscountry runner?
"It's kind of funny - I used to hate exercise. I just didn't like sports in general. My parents made me join cross country (in fifth grade) to get me in shape, and the first year I really liked it. After about two years I just started getting really good at it.
"Runners, naturally from running, lose flexibility and strength; by gaining strength and getting flexibility, I become a better runner. My dad had this set of P90X DVDs that he bought years ago, and I took one out and played it one day and thought, I kind of like it. After practice I'd come home and do some P90X, and if I felt good I'd do some yoga. I'd just do stuff on my own to make me a better runner."
What do you like about running?
"It's a stress release for me because I have OCD and a lot of anxiety and for years I struggled with it, but once I started exercising, it released a lot of tension in my mind."
What's your workout schedule like?
"During the season, every day I'm running at least about three miles, but on days where I really go for distance I can run like 11. Usually what we'll do is: Monday distance, Tuesday speed, Wednesday distance - and go back and forth and do a little bit of what they call muscle confusion, where you're getting more results by changing up your workout."
Do you have any goals with cross country?
"What's really hard with the goals part is, because I have OCD I will obsess over my goals and I've learned, over this past season really, not to stress out so much about it. So what I decided to do was run as fast as I can and see how far I can go. That way I can really go for peace of mind, if that makes sense."
Are there any runners who inspire you?

What's managing MS like?
"I'm on a medication right now that I take once a week and I'm about to switch to one I take every two weeks, so we'll see. I also feel like working out and eating well is how I manage too, because I feel like the more I take care of myself, the less I make myself prone to stress or injuries or other issues that can exacerbate my MS."
Is there anything you have to watch or limit in any way?
"I'm more careful in the summer when I run because I am heat-sensitive, so I have to be easier on myself about it. But on the other hand, I can get into this weird kind of loop where it's like, oh, I'm hurting, so I should stop, but am I hurting because it's my MS telling me I'm hurting because my nerves are misfiring or am I actually injured?"
You're an avid cook. Would you consider yourself a healthy cook?
"I think I am, even though I love to use butter and cream. I've been thinking about this a lot. I saw that Larabar commercial yesterday and I was like, wow, I guess their slogan now is 'Food made from food.' So I will use butter and I will use cream, but I try to use real food. It's amazing how much processed food and fast food I used to eat. So I'm healthier, how about that?"
What's your favorite healthy thing to make?
"My favorite 'healthy' dish to make is two eggs, two pieces of multigrain-and-seed toast and half an avocado. I make some version for breakfast every morning."
Do you listen to music when you work out?
"I have to listen to music when I run. A lot of it is - I don't know what else to call it: stripper rap. There's Outkast and Three 6 Mafia and Ying Yang Twins. It just makes me want to dance and get going."
Do you have any bucket-list exercise goals?
"To do the Bay to Breakers run in
Durbin, 66, is not shy about his killer abs. "Wanna see the eight-pack?" he asks. He lifts up his shirt to show off a chiseled stomach: the product of his late-in-life commitment to healthy living and the gym.
Durbin, also known as Rock-Hard Papaw, posts daily workout videos and encouragement ("AGE IS JUST A NUMBER!") to his 10,000 Instagram followers. Though he was recently diagnosed with with colon cancer, he says, "I'm still the luckiest guy, even with cancer. I'm going to beat it - that's just all there is to it. Cancer won't keep me out the gym."
Have you always been so active?
"To be honest with you, I really started to get disgusted with everything about myself when I was about 56. I'm 5'8" and weighed 222 pounds. I couldn't do nothing. I had bad ankles - I've had 13 surgeries on my ankles. I got in poor health. I got a heart condition. I watched all my kids from the living room. I couldn't go out, couldn't play games or nothing. Then the grandbabies started coming along, and I thought, 'I'm not going to sit here watching them too.'
"So I went to the
What's your diet plan?
"You don't get to eat anything that tastes good is all. Red meat's out right now; I'll never eat another piece of red meat. I get most of my protein from vegetables. Peas are one of the best sources of protein you can get."
What does your workout routine look like?
"It seems like I can't get enough of it. I get up at 3:30 and start my morning ab work and cardio at 4.1 eat breakfast at 5, then a shower, then my second meal. Then I head to the gym for about three hours. I do at least 300 push-ups a day at the house. Right now when I leave here I'll probably go down to the river and find something to hang off." (Durbin's latest workout of choice is "flagging" from a Zejax bar or sign post, using his body weight as resistance. He also likes to go to the skate park downtown, where he uses the half-pipe to do running wall flips.)
Can you keep up with your grandkids now?
"Oh, yeah. The grandkids came up with the nickname 'Rock-Hard Papaw.' My little six-year-old grandson, he calls me 'Papaw Muscles.' He likes to climb the rock wall at the New Albany Y with me."

What was life like after open-heart surgery at age 20?
"I wasn't able to drive. I had to sleep sitting up because lying on my back hurt my chest. And I'm always like an upbeat, high-energy person, very positive, but I actually went through some depression. It's normal for people who have open-heart surgery to go through some depression, which I didn't really realize. I actually went through the rehab a lot longer than most people just because I was trying to get back to my dancing abilities, not just getting back up and walking. But I was able to go back my senior year and I was back on the dance team."
What are you able to do now, workout-wise?
"Now, I'm fully recovered. I do a lot of spin classes and running. Also, I like to throw in some Pure Barre every now and then. Before I even knew I had a heart condition, I never really went to the gym. Dance practice was like my workout. When we had to go run or I had to be on an elliptical, I would be on there for like 10 minutes and I would have to get off because I just couldn't take it for some reason. Now it makes sense why I couldn't go very long. But now when I'm on the treadmill, I can go for an hour and feel good."
SUPPORT GROUPS
The goal of support groups is to provide people who share a common disease or medical problem with a place to seek help in the form of information, shared personal experiences, sympathy and understanding. Some support groups may require membership fees, while others are open to anyone at any time at no cost. Most of the groups listed here are facilitated by a professional who controls discussions and handles the organizational details.

IMMEDIATE CARE
Patients increasingly are turning to immediate-care centers for injuries and health problems when a visit to their primary-care physician is not possible and an emergency room is not required. Such centers generally have on-site physicians, expanded evening and weekend hours and accept patients on a walk-in, no-appointment basis. Most also offer X-ray facilities and minor trauma care.

INSURANCE
These insurance companies offer one or more of the following traditional plans:
Fee-for-service - You visit any medical professional you choose, pay for the bill yourself, and then submit a claim for reimbursement. The plan involves higher deductibles and copayments.
HMO - You pay a flat monthly rate with no deductibles for services provided by professionals within the HMO network. All services must be cleared by the HMO.
PPO - The network of medical providers is broader than an HMO and care is paid for (at a reduced rate) as it is received rather than beforehand through a set fee.
POS - This plan combines features of HMOs and PPOs. You decide whether to use an in-network or out-of-network provider.
I nsurance companies more commonly offer high-deductible health plans that benefit both consumers and employers. These plans can include accounts such as:
HSA (health savings account). Participantprovided tax-free deposits fund an account that helps offset the generally higher deductibles.
HRA (health reimbursement account). The group plan or the insurance provider funds reimbursement accounts for the generally higher deductible. HRA account eligibility is usually tied to wellness or incentive programs, such as biometric screenings and health assessment surveys.

HOME HEALTH
Home health care covers a wide range of services, from specialized therapy and diagnostic services to custodial care. Health insurance usually won't cover these types of services unless they are ordered by a physician or are medically necessary, and payment is usually on a per-visit basis as opposed to hourly. Services can include nursing, physical therapy, housekeeping, live-in care, delivery of respiratory equipment, beds and meals on wheels, among others.
