German woman killed in Lake Shore Drive crash identified

Chicago Tribune (IL)

Oct. 23--The woman struck and killed by a motorcycle on Lake Shore Drive has been identified as a 25-year-old from Germany, according to authorities.

Katrin Kutscheidt died of multiple blunt force injuries and her death was ruled an accident, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

She and a 40-year-old man were among a group of pedestrians who were crossing Lake Shore Drive around 10:45 p.m. Monday when a motorcyclist driving between cars ran a red light and struck them in a crosswalk near Buckingham Fountain.

The two were thrown 30 to 40 feet by the impact, authorities said.

Kutscheidt was pronounced dead at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. The man was taken to Stroger Hospital in serious condition.

The man riding the motorcycle, Charles Lyons, 20, was taken in serious condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Police said he suffered spinal cord injuries.

Lyons, of the 9400 block of South Spaulding Avenue in Evergreen Park, was cited with disobeying a red light, not having a valid motorcycle classification, not having insurance, not having a driver's license, failing to reduce his speed to avoid an accident, failing to yield to pedestrians in a roadway and improper lane usage.

Authorities said they contacted the German Consulate in Chicago to help reach the relatives of the woman.

The crash remains under investigation.
