Four left homeless in Sharon fire

Nov. 22--SHARON -- A family of four adults was left homeless by a fire Saturday night in northeast Sharon.

Sharon Fire Department was dispatched at 6:39 p.m. to 127 Taylor Ave. Upon arrival, fire Chief Bob Fiscus said he called for a second alarm.

When Fiscus arrived at the scene, before city firefighters, he reported seeing heavy fire coming from the front and back of the house. With Sharon and Farrell firefighters already on the way, the second alarm brought out Hermitage, Sharpsville and Brookfield fire departments.

The fire was under control in 10 minutes and no one was hurt.

The fire started in the living room, said Fiscus. Someone sleeping in the room noticed the fire, which also triggered smoke alarms, allowing the two occupants who were home at the time to escape.

"The house is not liveable," Fiscus said. "There was heavy fire damage to half of the first floor and the entire house sustained heat and smoke damage and some water damage."

The cause of the fire is under investigation, Fiscus said.

The renters, Tim Slattery and Nicole Nanners, did not have insurance and lost everything, Fiscus said.

The American Red Cross will assist the family.

Seven cats were also living in the house. One was rescued from the basement, firefighters found the bodies of two others killed in the blaze and four are still missing, Fiscus said.

Firefighters left the scene at 8:02 p.m. McGonigle Ambulance also assisted.
