Fire strikes Mont Alto church Sunday

Nov. 05--A fire broke out Sunday afternoon at the Central Baptist Church in Mont Alto.

According to CBC's pastor John Buhr, no one was inside the building at the time of the fire.

"It wasn't 30 minutes after we left the church to go to a function that I was back at the church after hearing the news," recalled Buhr, who was in attendance at the function.

Buhr said the damage was contained to the church's library. Emergency personnel from around the area responded to the fire reported at the church on Anthony Highway.

"Thankfully it didn't spread too much, we only have light damage and some blackened walls in the sanctuary," he said.

The Sunday evening service was cancelled as fire marshals and insurance adjusters surveyed the damage to determine a cause.

"We are so thankful to the firefighters for taking care of us," remarked Buhr. "Our congregation was a little shook up about the whole thing; we're thankful that our church was saved."

Buhr said that church services for Veterans Day, Sunday Nov. 11, have a possibility to be held in their social hall.
