Aug. 18--A dog that alerted a Salina couple to a previous fire died Thursday in a fire that destroyed their mobile home, Fire Marshal Roger Williams said.
Ramona and Terry Conyac, who rented the mobile home at 708 N. Second, were being assisted by the North Central Kansas Chapter of the American Red Cross following the blaze, which was reported at about 11:15 a.m.
Investigator Jeff Daily said the fire started in the living room area, but the cause remains undetermined. Firefighters had the fire under control quickly Thursday morning, but the home was extensively damaged.
The Conyacs escaped the residence safely with the help of a neighbor before firefighters arrived, Williams said. They will not be able to live in the home, and they did not have insurance for the belongings that were destroyed, he said.
Williams said the Conyacs were checked by emergency medical responders and declined further treatment.
The dog, which was 14 years old, had alerted the Conyacs to a fire when they lived in a different mobile home at 917 N. 13th and escaped successfully with them at that time. On Thursday, it was found dead in the home after the fire was extinguished.
