FEMA: Protect yourself against future disasters with flood insurance
Dayton Daily News (OH)
Aug. 23--FEMA is urging homeowners, renters and business owners to protect themselves against future disasters with coverage from the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).
Floods are the most common and costly natural disasters in the U.S. Just an inch of water in an average-sized home can cause over $25,000 in damage, a cost that's rarely covered by standard homeowner or renter's insurance.
FEMA urges homeowners, renters and business owners to protect their homes and assets from financial loss with an NIFP policy.
NIFP insurance is an affordable way to protect investments in homes, businesses and property:
* Homes can be insured against flood damage up to $250,000 and commercial buildings for up to $500,000.
* Policies can cover contents up to $100,000 for homes and $500,000 for business.
* Renters can insure their personal property for up to $100,000.
To be eligible, your hometown or county must apply to participate in the program and adopt certain ordinances.
