Ex-Coach USA bus driver guilty on traffic charges in collision that killed Citi Bike cyclist
Lewis, who was behind the wheel of a 55-passenger, 50-ton coach bus on
Investment banker Dan Hanegby, 36, was crushed by the bus on a Chelsea street after Lewis honked his horn in an effort to shoo him off, prosecutors said.
"He was going to try to overtake the cyclist," Assistant District Attorney
Hanegby's widow wiped away tears and was comforted by supporters in the hallway after the emotional verdict.
Her husband's gruesome death was logged as the city's first Citi Bike fatality.
Instead of stopping and giving Hanegby the right of way, Lewis "encroached on and narrowly closed the distance between him and the cyclist," Belizaire argued.
An attorney for Lewis said his client did have enough room to pass Hanegby safely, and argued that to come to a halt on
Hanegby, who was wearing headphones and did not react to the horn, pedaled into the path of the bus and did not see it until it was too late, Lewis' attorney said.
"He panics and when he panics he loses control and unfortunately finds himself under the back of the bus," the lawyer said.
Lewis is set to be sentenced on
