EDITORIAL: Truth in advertising laws don’t seem to cover political ads; retaining a piece of Obamacare | Letters

South Florida Sun Sentinel (FL)

Oct. 21--Those lyin' political ads

Like all of you, I am being subjected to a barrage of factually inaccurate, often outright lies, masquerading as political ads. The ads are just tabloid trash and not informative but, unfortunately, all that matters to our politicians is winning; facts and truth be damned!

Almost every state, including Florida, has "Truth in Advertising laws" to protect the public from misleading or deceptive advertising. These laws have severe penalties and fines, but they seem not to cover political ads. This means that the legislators feels that protecting us from buying the wrong toothpaste is more important than the election of unfit politicians.

The only thing worse than the absurdity of this position is the obvious self interest of our elected officials. It is time we demand that these false, baseless , and misleading ads, especially negative ads, be held to, at least, the same scrutiny as commercial advertising. TRUTH MATTERS!

Marvin Wolf, Plantation

Retaining a piece of Obamacare

Republicans who fought to first defeat Obamacare later voted more than 50 times voted to repeal it without any replacement. During the past two years they have done their best to dismantle crucial aspects.

They have now decided that although they continue to want nothing to do with Obamacare, they want to guarantee that those with preexisting conditions are somehow covered. When asked how that might occur, one Congressional candidate suggested a high risk pool comprised of only those who were declined coverage. This would result in one category of healthy individuals who might decide to buy insurance and those rejected for coverage.

Of course, the healthy participants would pay lower premiums because they obviously would have fewer claims. The castoffs would likely experience sky high premiums which they could not afford and would not pay.

This was the pre-Obamacare circumstance. High risk pools are under funded and largely comprised of lower income patients whose needs are ignored. The purpose of Obamacare is to meld the younger and healthier with those who may require a higher degree of care. The outcome would be a fully insured population which ultimately would be healthier as a result of being cared for, without discrimination.

After seeing that Republicans have put healthcare on the critical list, why does anyone think they suddenly care about the category of those that insurance companies want nothing to do with?

President Trump: Tough Guy

President Trump was at a rally in Montana Friday night. He was entertaining his supporters by mimicking last years body slamming of a Democrat by his Republican opponent prior to the elections. I wonder how his supporters' would've reacted if Hillary Clinton turned around and slapped Mr. Trump as he invaded her space continuously during a presidential debate. Of course, given our double standards she would've been labelled hysterical, emotionally unfit etc., etc. Still, I would've given a month's salary to see it
