Oct. 12--Feldman firing as city manager a mistake

While new to the city, the idea of non-partisan, professional management, brought to my attention the rare gift Fort Lauderdale had in Lee Feldman.

Just this year elected as one of only 41 leaders nationwide named to the National Academy of Public Administration's 2018 Class of Academy Fellows. Add to that a top bond rating for our city.

And our City Commission voted 3-2 to let him go. Mistake for the city. Mistake for the mayor. Mistake for a commission to let this go down 3-2.

So much for professional management.

Kicking the can and city manager down road

The majority of the City of Fort Lauderdale commissioners once again took the political out and kicked the city manager down the road instead of listening and addressing issues critical to the fiscal health and safety of the City.

Instead of recently raising property taxes, they ordered the city manager to cut $5 plus million from the budget. Instead of floating $1.4 billion in bonds to fix the sick and dangerous sewer system, they continue to waste money applying Band Aids to the system.

Instead of halting the approval of massive new real estate projects, they continue to approve them and allow them to connect to the overworked and dangerous sewer system.

Likely the majority of the commissioners will hire a new city Manager who is a yes man or yes woman, instead of a forward, progressive thinker.

"Nutty" storm reporters bound to get hurt

Why do some TV reporters and meteorologists feel compelled to stand outside in the midst of a Category 4 hurricane to demonstrate how hard the wind is blowing?

Some time in the future one of these 'nuts' will get nailed in the head by an airborne 2 x 4 or get swept out to sea by the storm surge, all on live TV.

Messy aftermath for North Ocean tree project

We have lived through more than two years of every day construction on our street. We were very patient.

However, almost finished, over 200 trees were planted on both sides of the street. I would like to know if there was a fire sale on so many different types of trees.

What a mess!

It could have been beautiful and added to the neighborhood, instead it is an ugly mess.

Bill Nelson better than GOP ads suggest

I am getting tired of the recent ads I've seen against Senator Bill Nelson that are sponsored by The New Republican PAC, which was once chaired by his opponent, Rick Scott.

In the ad it mentions that Nelson voted along party lines nearly 89% of the time. So what! Republican senators vote along party lines approximately 98% of the time, and Democrats over 90%.

Additionally, back in 2007, after I had to go on disability retirement from the Dept. of Homeland Security because I needed reconstructive foot surgery, my insurance company denied the surgery because they claimed it was an unnecessary procedure. I contacted Senator Nelson and explained the situation. The following week I received a letter from the insurance company that the surgery was approved. Senator Nelson came through for me. That is one of many reasons why he has my vote.

"Yes" for Palm Beach Co. school referendum

Florida's education system is ranked one of the lowest in the country and our state government has shifted school funding from public to charter schools. Palm Beach County schools need your help to improve teacher pay, maintain arts and music education and enhance school safety.

This referendum calls for an ad valorem millage of 1.00 mills which will replace the expiring 0.25 mills. The impact on one's taxes will be minimal, but the benefits will be enormous, resulting in the hiring of 600 desperately needed new teachers and mental health professionals, raising teacher pay and help fund art, music and physical education classes.

Most importantly, every dollar garnered from this referendum will go to public schools only with oversight from an independent committee of citizens and experts.

It's time for the residents of Palm Beach County to take a stand for our public school system and help make our children and grandchildren better educated and more productive citizens.
