Jan. 10--TRAVERSE CITY -- A Traverse City man was arrested after authorities said he fled and crashed into a tree.
A Grand Traverse County sheriff's deputy Tuesday afternoon saw the 47-year-old man speed by him in a red Chevrolet Blazer during a traffic stop, traveling southbound at an estimated 70 mph in a 55-mph zone along Garfield Road near Black Bark Road.
Capt. Chris Clark said the deputy drove after the man and attempted to pull him over. The man sped up and started to lose control before turning down Salon Road.
Clark said the man was driving at approximately 50 mph around a bend and drove into a tree.
When asked why he tried to get away, according to Clark, the man told the deputy "I'm rolling dirty -- dirty as f---."
A breathalyzer showed a blood-alcohol level of .127. The deputy also discovered the license plate on the vehicle had been reported stolen out of Traverse City. The vehicle itself, however, was not stolen.
The man was taken to Grand Traverse County jail on charges of operating while intoxicated, his fourth offense, fleeing and eluding, driving while license suspended, his second offense, operating without insurance and possession of stolen property.
