According to news reporting originating in Busan, South Korea, by NewsRx journalists, research stated, “We investigated the risk of stroke according to statin medication compliance in the elderly with chronic periodontitis. Chronic periodontitis patients were extracted from the National Health Insurance Service-Senior Cohort Database from 2002 to 2014.”

The news reporters obtained a quote from the research from Dong-A University, “Among 255,056 chronic periodontitis patients, 41,412 patients with statin prescriptions for 28 days or more were included. Study population was divided into the top 25% of medication compliance group (TSG) and the lower 25% of medication compliance group (BSG). 1:1 propensity score matching was performed and the final numbers of BSG and TSG were 6,172, respectively. To analyze the risk of stroke, the Cox proportional-hazard model was performed to calculate hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) after adjusting for age, sex, income level, hypertension, diabetes, and Charlson comorbidity index. In the Kaplan-Meier curve, the disease-free probability decreased prominently in BSG compared to TSG (p for log-rank = 0.001). The HR and 95% CIs in the multivariable-adjusted model for stroke occurrence in TSG compared to BSG were confirmed as 0.79 [0.67 to 0.92] (p = 0.002). In the subgroup analysis, there was a significant association between the compliance to statin medication and stroke, especially in women, the late elderly (85 years or older), and the group with comorbidities. Increasing compliance to statins may reduce stroke risk in the elderly with chronic periodontitis.”

According to the news reporters, the research concluded: “Therefore, in order to increase the medication compliance of the elderly with chronic periodontitis, it is necessary to make an effort to provide effective medication guidance to medical staffs.”
