Data on Drug Research Reported by Researchers at Loma Linda University Health (Insurance interference in electrophysiology: Reclaiming control for timely cardiac care): Drug Research

Insurance Daily News

2025 NOV 18 (NewsRx) -- By a News Reporter-Staff News Editor at Insurance Daily News -- A new study on Drug Research is now available. According to news reporting originating in Loma Linda, California, by NewsRx journalists, research stated, “Prior authorization (PA)-originally intended to curb unindicated treatments-has become a pervasive hurdle that often delays or denies timely care. Third-party (TP) insurance companies have weaponized the PA process to stall access.”

The news reporters obtained a quote from the research from Loma Linda University Health, “Complex algorithms and Third-party (TP) insurance payer rule books-often ignoring guidelines from medical societies-systematically restrict patient access to appropriate care. The burden of navigating this complex system falls on providers with limited influence and resources. In electrophysiology (EP), where timely intervention is critical, these barriers can have serious consequences. This article examines how PA impedes essential EP therapies (including left atrial appendage occlusion, cardiac implantable electronic device implants, and antiarrhythmic or anticoagulant medications) and how delays affect outcomes, workflow, and health equity.”

According to the news reporters, the research concluded: “We also investigate the root causes of the PA problem and explore policy solutions to streamline access to needed care.”

This research has been peer-reviewed.
