Nov. 24--An unattended cooking fire displaced five people late Monday afternoon after the blaze on Sink Circle.
Lexington Fire Department Capt. Maurice Hodges said firefighters were dispatched to the house fire at 3:46 p.m. Firefighters arrived at 9 Sink Circle to find smoke coming from the attic area of the house.
Firefighters determined the fire was in the kitchen area. It took them about 20 minutes to get the fire under control.
"We listed it as unattended food on the stove," Hodges said, referring to the cause.
One of the occupants of the home sustained minor smoke inhalation. She was treated by Davidson County EMS, said Hodges, who was acting fire commander for LFD.
An occupant of the home was identified as Larry Jekins. The family declined an interview with The Dispatch.
Hodges said the home can be repaired. An estimate of the damage was not available with the fire department Monday evening. The homeowner has insurance, the captain said.
Hodges said smoke detectors alerted the occupants to the blaze. That's when they found the fire on the stove. Hodges said at least two occupants were at home at the time of the fire.
Responding agencies were the LFD, the American Red Cross and Davidson County EMS. Firefighters were on the scene for two hours, 20 minutes.
