Carl Phillips

Daily Record, The (Wooster, OH)

ASHLAND -- Carl M. Phillips, 85, of Ashland, entered his heavenly home early Wednesday morning, May 20, 2015, and was reunited with his loving wife, Pauline, and their son, Brian Wayne Phillips.

He was born in northern Ashland County June 29, 1929, to the late Oscar and Hortense (Stone) Phillips, and had been a resident of Ashland his entire life. Carl was a graduate of Nova High School, class of 1948, and following graduation worked on the family farm outside of Nova until joining the U.S. Air Force, where he served his country during the Korean Conflict.

Following his discharge from the Air Force, Carl worked as a meat cutter at the A&P Store in New London for 12 years.

He then began a career in the insurance business becoming an agent with the Phillips-Hawk Insurance Company, selling Lighting Rod Mutual Insurance. Along with his insurance business, Carl became a licensed Realtor and sold insurance and real estate until his retirement in 1995.

Carl was a member and past president of Nova Lions Club and was a member of Lion's Color Guard, which at one time involved the Nova, Polk and Savannah Lion's clubs.

He was a member of Ashland County Board of Realtors, Savannah VFW Post 5692, Harry Higgins American Legion Post 88, and was a member of the Memorial Day Honor Guard, where he would participate in the services at Savannah, Nova, Sullivan and Ruggles and would also spend many hours placing flags on the graves of veterans in the county cemeteries prior to the Memorial Day services.

He was an avid bee keeper and at one time cared for 45 hives. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and was considered a conservationist, and at one time raised pheasants so he could release them into the wild.

On June 27, 1947, Carl married the love of his life, Pauline Ruth Howman, a loving relationship that endured for nearly 64 years until Pauline passed away June 21, 2012.

Surviving are a daughter, Barbara (Gary) Wise of Ashland, and a son, Brad (Barb) Phillips of Ashland; grandsons, Jacob Phillips of Ashland and Tom (Melissa) Phillips of West Salem; and several nieces.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Pauline; a son, Brian Wayne Phillips in August of 1979; and a sister, Doris Cypher.

Graveside services and burial will be Friday, May 22 at 11 a.m. in Savannah Cemetery, with Chaplain David Matos officiating. The Ashland Veterans Honor Guard will provide full military honors at the cemetery.

There will be no calling hours. Denbow-Gasche Funeral Home & Crematory, Ashland, is serving the family. Online condolences may be shared with the family at www.dpkfh.com

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Lions Philanthropic Fund, 13B for Project Lifesaver, in care of Ev Shonkwiler, 922 Hale Ave., Ashland 44805; or Hospice of North Central Ohio, 1050 Dauch Drive, Ashland 44805.
