Brown Sponsors Legislation to Expand Health Insurance Coverage for Military Families

CLEVELAND, OH- U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) is cosponsoring legislation that would ensure children of disabled veterans can continue getting health coverage through the VA up to age 26. Private insurance companies already allow children to stay on their parents' health insurance through age 26, and this bill would give military families the same option.

"When men and women in uniform serve our country, their loved ones serve as well," said Brown. "This bill allows children of disabled veterans to stay on their parents' insurance while they go to college or start their careers, the same way that children whose parents have private insurance do today. I'm proud to stand with veterans groups in support of this legislation."

The CHAMPVA Children's Protection Act increases the eligibility age from 23 to 26 for the Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Department of Veterans' Affairs (CHAMPVA), which provides health insurance for dependents of disabled veterans and survivors of veterans who have died. The Military Officers Association of America, Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Vietnam Veterans of America, and the Paralyzed Veterans of America support the legislation.
