BRIEF: Sheldon promoted to Brownsville Fire Chief

Aug. 13--The City of Brownsville says interim fire chief Jarrett V. Sheldon has been appointed as fire chief beginning today. In a news release, the city says Sheldon was sworn in earlier today at City Hall.

"Jarrett V. Sheldon has fulfilled the role of Fire Chief with a strong commitment to the public safety of the residents of Brownsville," said Interim City Manager Michael L. Lopez.

Sheldon joined the department in Aug. 2001 as a probationary firefighter. During his career he has been promoted to fire lieutenant and deputy fire chief.

Sheldon was appointed the interim chief after former fire chief Carlos Elizondo was suspended without pay and then fired from the department following his arrest on felony charges.

He was indicted and arrested in Oct. 2017 on a charge of theft by a public servant and misapplication of fiduciary property following a complaint filed against Elizondo in August 2017 by the Brownsville Firefighters Association.
