July 13--POMONA -- A La Verne insurance agent who admitted pocketing a client's premium will pay restitution.
Sanny Cazares, 46, of La Verne pleaded no contest in a Pomona courtroom to charges of grand theft, according to a California Department of Insurance news release. He was ordered to pay $1,960 in restitution, serve three years' probation and ordered to serve 120 hours of community service.
It's unclear when Cazares appeared in court.
CDI agents began their investigation into Cazares in September 2014 after receiving a complaint from a business owner who said she was sold a general liability policy to insure her business, the release says.
Cazares admitted that no premium was remitted to an insurance company, leaving the client's business exposed for at least three months.
"Cazares' theft left this business owner at great financial risk," Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones said in a statement. "Dishonest agents and brokers who scam their clients will be pursued by my office."
Cazares surrendered her insurance license to the Department of Insurance in court the same day she was sentenced.
