BRIEF: County program receives national recognition
Cape Cod Times (Hyannis, MA)
May 11--BARNSTABLE -- The county's effort to combat rising flood insurance premiums is receiving national recognition.
Shannon Jarbeau, the Cape Cod Cooperative Extension's community rating system coordinator, recently received the James Lee Witt Award for Excellence in Floodplain Management at a conference of the National Association of Floodplain Managers in Kansas City, Missouri.
The county's CRS program is the first of its kind in the country. A component of the National Flood Insurance Program, CRS allows policyholders in participating towns that take steps to reduce flood risk to obtain a reduction in flood insurance premiums. CRS floodplain management activities also enhance public safety, reduce damages to property and public infrastructure, avoid economic disruption and losses and protect the environment.
Last year, 2,100 policyholders in four Cape towns received $162,000 in savings from the CRS. Projections for 2017 call for 2,900 policyholders in seven towns to save $275,000.
