Blaze destroys family’s home

May 08-- May 8--WEST SALEM TOWNSHIP -- A fire in a West Salem Township home Monday night displaced a family of three.

The family was not home when the fire broke out about 9:30 p.m. A passerby saw the fire and called Mercer County 911.

No one was injured in the blaze, but a family dog and some baby chicks died.

West Salem Township fire Chief Bill Brown said firefighters were dispatched at 9:40 p.m. to 175 N. Stateline Road, West Salem Township.

"The first arriving engine found a fully involved fire at a mobile home," Brown said. "The cause is under investigation. It's nothing suspicious."

The state police fire marshal was asked to determine cause and origin, he said.

A young couple with an infant rented the home from property owners Gregory and Joedy Lawrence. The couple are being assisted by the American Red Cross and had renter's insurance.

Brown said the home was a total loss.

West Salem Township Volunteer Fire Department was assisted by Jamestown, Hempfield and South Pymatuning volunteer fire departments and Burghill Vernon and Kinsman fire departments in Ohio. Life Force Ambulance also was at the scene.
