Benicia city officials urge residents to prepare for weekend storm

Jan. 07--A series of strong storms, with heavy rain and high winds, are predicted for Northern California this weekend and Benicia Fire Department and other officials urge residents to prepare.

National Weather Service forecasters say a major storm should hit the area starting Saturday and continuing through Monday, with another predicted to start Tuesday.

"Creeks and streams are still running high, and significant rainfall, as well as high tides, could bring the potential for flooding," according to a Benicia Fire Department news release. "In addition, gusty winds could bring widespread downed trees and power outages due to already saturated soil."

Police, Fire, Public Works, and Parks staff will be available day and night during the storm, it says.

"Benicia residents are encouraged to be as prepared as possible," officials said. "This means checking to make sure that all drains on your property are clear, sump pumps are functioning, and that leaves and other debris are removed. Have plenty of water and food on hand should the power be out for an extended period of time and be prepared to evacuate, if necessary."
