APIAHF Applauds Biden Administration Plan to Expand Health Coverage to DACA Recipients

WASHINGTON, April 15 (TNStalk) -- The Asian and Pacific Islander American Health Forum issued the following statement on April 13, 2023:

President Joe Biden announced a plan to expand health coverage for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients, including coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace where they may qualify for financial assistance based on income and through their state Medicaid agency. This proposed rule would bring stability and peace of mind to nearly 600,000 Dreamers.

Juliet K. Choi, President & CEO of the Asian & Pacific Islander American Health Forum (APIAHF) and former Chief of Staff and Senior Advisor of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, gave the following statement:

"We applaud President Biden for expanding coverage to DACA recipients, which approximately 10 percent are Asian Americans & Pacific Islanders. Despite being able to work and reside in the United States, DACA recipients are denied access to many health care options provided by the Affordable Care Act. During a time when access to health care is especially critical, this restriction jeopardizes DACA recipients' health and increases the risk to their families, communities, and public safety and health for all.

"Unfortunately, this proposed rule only offers a temporary solution toward expanding health care access for DACA recipients who, day in and day out, contribute to the daily fabric of our American society. We urge Congress to pass legislation for a pathway to citizenship for DACA recipients, so every person has access to the quality, affordable health care they deserve."
