A fake bear, luxury cars, and a scam that went wrong
CE Noticias Financieras
What appeared to be a curious case of damage caused by a bear turned out to be an unusual scam. In California, three people were convicted of fraud after faking attacks by an animal... that was actually a human in disguise. The scheme, dubbed "Operation Bear Claw," involved staging damage inside luxury cars, including a Rolls-Royce and two Mercedes. To lend credibility to the story, the group recorded videos in mountainous areas showing the supposed "bear" moving inside the vehicles and leaving marks on seats and doors. With that footage, they attempted to collect nearly $142,000 from insurance companies. However, something didn't add up. A wildlife expert analyzed the footage and confirmed the obvious: it wasn't an animal, but a person in disguise. Two men and a woman pleaded guilty and received weekend detention and probation, in addition to returning part of the money. The case, as creative as it was botched, shows that not everything that seems wild... actually is.
