Woman cited in fatal crash jailed for continuing to drive

April 03--GRAHAM -- A woman who allegedly ran a red light and caused the crash that killed an 86-year-old man in 2013 is now charged with second-degree murder and felony death by vehicle.

Jeanette Lynn Miles, 42, of 6226 McLeansville Road, McLeansville, was indicted on those more serious charges Oct. 27, accused of driving while impaired Nov. 15, 2013, when her 2000 Hyundai sedan crashed into a Dodge Caravan driven by Haywood King.

King's van was crossing University Drive at Williamson Avenue in Elon when Miles' car, traveling west on University Drive at about 60 mph, struck the van. King was ejected from his vehicle and hit by an SUV. He died from his injuries several days later.

On Wednesday, Miles appeared in Alamance County Superior Court on a motion to modify her bond, originally set at $5,000 on a charge of involuntary manslaughter and other traffic violations.

Since October, Miles has been charged in five stops while driving in Guilford County, court documents said. Miles' license is listed as revoked, documents said.

--On Oct. 5, a Guilford County deputy charged her with driving while license revoked, non-impaired revocation, and having a fictitious tag.

--On Oct. 13, the N.C. Highway Patrol charged her with driving while license revoked, expired registration, operating a vehicle with no insurance, and driving a vehicle with no registration.

--On Nov. 8, Greensboro police charged her with having no operator's license and having a fictitious tag.

--On Jan. 3, Greensboro police charged her with borrowing a license plate and possession of a schedule II controlled substance. She had oxycodone in her possession, and a passenger was charged with cocaine possession, court documents said.

--On Feb. 3, Miles was charged with having a fictitious tag.

Alamance County Assistant District Attorney Kennedy Gates filed the motion to modify Miles' bond in light of her indictment and additional charges.

"The defendant's actions listed above show that the defendant lacks respect for law enforcement and the judicial system, and will not remain amenable to the orders and processes of the court. The defendant's behavior demonstrates that she is a danger to the community and that she will not abide by the orders of this court," the motion says.

Superior Court Judge Wayne Abernathy ordered Miles held in the Alamance County jail under an additional $20,000 bond, and that she not drive. If she is caught driving, her bond is immediately to be revoked, and she must go before a Superior Court judge, Abernathy ordered.

Miles' trial was tentatively scheduled for the June 1 calendar, Gates said.

According to the N.C. Department of Public Safety's website, from 1999 to 2007 Miles was convicted of a number of misdemeanor offenses, including possession of stolen goods, attempted crime against nature, soliciting and prostitute, and passing a worthless check. No DWIs are listed on her record.
