“Winner” loses $370 to phone scammer

The Moultrie Observer, Ga.
By The Moultrie Observer, Ga.
McClatchy-Tribune Information Services

April 19--MOULTRIE -- A Colquitt County woman has learned the hard way that if something sounds too good to be true, then it probably isn't true.

Melissa Kilgore, of Wilder Road, told Colquitt County sheriff's deputies she received a phone call Monday that said she'd won a trip to the Bahamas, and since she had two children she'd also receive two free tickets to Disney World. The caller requested a credit card number, and she gave the number from her EPPICard -- an electronic payment system for child support payments and state employees' payroll.

On Thursday, Kilgore checked the account and the person who had called had tried three times to take money from it. The first two attempts failed because the account didn't contain as much money as the person was trying to take, but the third time the person was able to get $370.
