Search tools donation, beer fundraiser part of Whatcom events for helping Oso

The Bellingham Herald (Bellingham, Wash.)

McClatchy-Tribune Information Services

March 31--Another round of Whatcom County events to help people affected by the deadly landslide in Oso begins Tuesday, April 1, with a sale on tools you can donate to searchers and a fundraiser at a local brewery. Ongoing events to raise money and volunteer information are listed below as well.

TUESDAY, APRIL 1

Search tools collection: Hardware Sales in Bellingham is holding a special sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 1, featuring the items most needed in the mudslide search effort. Shovels, hand tools and related items will be set up in a section of the store at 2034 James St. with 20 percent off coupons for the items. Customers can buy them, and they will be loaded into a truck for transport to the Oso searchers.

Beer release fundraiser: Kulshan Brewing Company, 2238 James St., Bellingham, will unveil its Last Resort India Pale Ale during a fundraiser from 6 to 9 p.m. benefitting the Snohomish County Helicopter Rescue Team.

Members of the team are expected to be on hand. The team responds to rescues in multiple counties, including Whatcom, and has assisted in the Oso mudslide, Skagit River bridge collapse and various rescues on trails, in the backcountry, at water events and more.

The brewery event includes raffle prizes, music, food and, of course, beer. Details: Kulshan's Facebook page.

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 2

Shop at Brenthaven: For every Brenthaven purchase in the Bellingham store, 909 Harris Ave., or online at brenthaven.com, the company will donate 20 percent directly to the Snohomish County Chapter of the American Red Cross to help the mudslide victims.

THURSDAY, APRIL 10

Concert, silent auction: Stay Oso Strong will feature Yogoman Burning Band, Staxx Brothers, Josh Clauson, Pacific High, Boombox Kid, and Critical Mass Marching Band performing in a benefit for mudslide victims at the Wild Buffalo, 208 W. Holly St., Bellingham. Doors open at 6 p.m. with music starting at 6:30; last act goes on at midnight.

Admission is by donation. Proceeds from the door and auction will be split between the Snohomish County Helicopter Rescue Team and the disaster relief account for Oso landslide victims through the Cascade Valley Hospital Health Foundation. Details: wildbuffalo.net.

ONGOING

Grocery gift cards: Arlington native Molly Fay of Goods Nursery and Produce, 2620 Northwest Ave., in Bellingham, is working with grocery stores in Arlington and Darrington to provide $100 gift cards to affected families so they can buy what they need most. Donations can be made online at gofundme.com/7r3evg or at Goods.

Volunteering: Do not go to the site to volunteer or drop off items. People are being turned away at the site. To check on ways you can volunteer or assist, go online to skagitvolunteercenter.org.

Community Food Co-op: Donations for the Snohomish County Chapter of the American Red Cross for mudslide relief are being taken at any register at both the downtown and Cordata stores.

Donating at Lynden businesses: Shell gas cards, duct tape, batteries, garbage bags, flashlights, boots, work gloves, bottled beverages, disposable tableware, cash, checks made out to Red Cross with Oso Landslide on remarks line, and letters or cards of support for victims still in the hospital are among the items being accepted at Beacon Insurance Group, 208 Third St. No. 2A, and at Banner Bank, 1980 Kok Road; Whatcom Farmers Co-op, 415 Depot Road; and at Natural Way Chiropractics, 102 Grover St., Suite 100.

To become a donation site, help deliver donations or learn more information, contact Jeanette Sharp at [email protected] or 360-354-2578, or Lynda Williams at [email protected] or 360-354-3006.

Fred Meyer: Coin boxes at checkstands of stores across Western Washington will collect donations over the next two weeks for the Red Cross of Snohomish County.

Haggen: Local stores are collecting donations for the American Red Cross for the next month or so.

Lowe's: Donations for the American Red Cross can be made at any Lowe's store.

North Coast Credit Union: Donations are accepted at any branch and will be sent to United Way of Snohomish County for its mudslide relief fund that helps those affected by the mudslide and the community service agencies assisting them. You don't need to be a credit union member to donate.

Local branches are at 1100 Dupont St. in Bellingham and 5657 Riverside Drive in Ferndale.

Red Cross: Donate to the American Red Cross disaster relief fund by calling 1-800-HELP-NOW or by going online to redcross.org. To donate $10, text redcross to 90999.

US Bank: People can donate to the "Northwest Response" fund for the Red Cross at US Bank branches.

Please email any additions or suggestions for this list to [email protected].
