"Motorcycling is a seasonal activity, with the majority of accidents and fatalities occurring between May and October. Even though the spring riding season is just a couple of weeks old, we are already seeing reported collisions involving motorcycles," says
Rotondo explains that one-third of motorcycle collisions occur at intersections, so it's important for drivers to check their mirrors and ensure the road is clear before proceeding. Drivers also need to check their blind spots and keep track of motorcycles on the road. And, as the most recent collision has demonstrated, it's also imperative for drivers to signal turns and change lanes properly.
According to the most recently available statistics, the number of motorcyclists injured on Ontario roads increased 5.5% from 1,166 in 2001 to 1,230 in 2010. During the same time frame, the number of passengers injured on a motorcycle has increased 45%, from 318 people in 2001 to 462 in 2010. In 2010, the last year for which statistics are available, 45 motorcycle drivers and two passengers were killed on Ontario roads. (Source: "Ontario Road Safety Annual Report (ORSAR) 2010,"
"It's very difficult to judge how fast a motorcycle is travelling. As a result, it's not uncommon for drivers to face charges for violating a rider's right-of-way," Rotondo adds. "And since motorcyclists ride with minimal protection, it's easy to see that a collision involving a motorcycle and motor vehicle usually ends with serious outcomes for riders and passengers--and in some instances, pedestrians."
Rotondo concludes by stating that the personal injury lawyers at Rotondo Law Firm understand that motorcycle accidents can be very complex. That's why the firm's experienced team helps motorcyclists and their passengers get the compensation they deserve for pain and suffering, lost wages, other related expenses, and the loss of enjoyment of life.
