Reed Technology and Information Services Recognized by Computerworld as a 2011 Honors Laureate

HORSHAM, Pa.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- IDG’s Computerworld Honors Program today announced Reed Technology and Information Services Inc., a part of the LexisNexis®family, as a 2011 Laureate for their groundbreaking work in producing an Electronic Patent XML Conversion System.”The annual award program honors visionary applications of information technology promoting positive social, economic and educational change.

“The number and quality of nominations this year were very inspiring and demonstrate how valuable IT is to community change,” said John Amato, Publisher, Computerworld. “Computerworld is very proud to name the 2011 class of Laureates and showcase their initiatives benefiting society through innovative uses of IT.”

As a service provider to the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for more than 40 years, Reed Technology today continues to leverage a broad array of technologies to ensure the uninterrupted delivery of highly structured patent database content to the agency.

“We are honored to be a part of the 2011 Laureate team. It is an acknowledgement of the tremendous value and importance of the role of technology in bringing searchable U.S. Patent content to the global intellectual property community,” said David Ballai, CIO and vice president of Commercial Solutions for Reed Technology. “Intellectual capital is now recognized as the most important asset of many of the world’s largest and most prominent organizations; it forms the basis for market leadership and continuing profitability for many of the world’s leading organizations."

The Reed Tech team is taking in tens of millions of semi-structured and unstructured pages of patent content from the USPTO every year, and producing searchable XML content databases at the rate of more than a billion characters per week, all at a very high level of accuracy.

The number of new patent applications in the U.S. has grown dramatically over the last decade. Combined with the increasing complexity of the average application, this has required the development of new systems and methodologies capable of handling the greater volume and complexity, while still supporting the highest levels of quality.

“High quality U.S. patent databases are critical both for the USPTO and for the worldwide intellectual property community” said Sam Hardman, president, Reed Technology. “Robust, accurate databases of patent information are needed by a broad range of businesses, research organizations, IP law firms and other entities. Such databases provide some of the key building blocks for discovery and further innovation that drives economic growth.”

The Computerworld Honors awards will be presented at the Annual Laureates Medal Ceremony & Gala Awards on June 20, 2011 at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium in Washington, D.C.
