Real World Instructors Teach Walsh PHR/SPHR Exam Prep Program: Professional in Human Resources Certification Prep Begins This Month at Walsh College

Targeted News Service

TROY, Mich., Sept. 16 -- Walsh College issued the following news release:

Bringing the real world into the classroom has been the hallmark of a Walsh College business education for more than 90 years. Rebecca Davies and Tina Marie Wohlfield are applying that practice to the field of human resources as instructors for the Professional in Human Resources Certification and Senior Professional in Human Resources (PHR/SPHR) Exam Preparation Program at Walsh.

Walsh is offering the PHR/SPHR Exam Prep course this fall at the Novi campus. Classes will be held on Wednesdays from 6-10 p.m. for nine weeks starting September 24. Tuition is $1,495 with a $200 discount for early registration. More information can be found online: www.walshcollege.edu/professional_development/certifications/phrexamprep. Tina Marie Wohlfield

Both Wohlfield and Davies agree that everyone learns from the classroom experience. "Along with the books and online tests and tools," says Wohlfield, "we learn from each other in our class discussions. I get so energized by the students, sometimes I find it hard to get to sleep on the nights I teach."

By day, Wohlfield is Compliance/Human Resources Consultant at Arthur J. Gallagher & Co., a multi-national, multi-billion dollar insurance brokerage and risk management services firm. She is also a Walsh College adjunct assistant professor teaching Total Compensation in the MBA program. Wohlfield holds an MBA from Walsh College and is certified as a Senior Human Resources Professional.

Having spent much of her career in a senior HR generalist/management role, Wohlfield's background gives her special kinship with Walsh PHR/SPHR students who typically work small to mid-size firms. "My prior career experiences exposed me to just about every possible HR responsibility and issue; everything from recruiting to onboarding to performance reviews to problem employees and termination. I can relate to the students in just about every HR situation."

Team-teaching the program, Wohlfield and Davies split the sessions into their specialty areas - Davies taking the legal, compliance, and regulations sections. She is an attorney practicing employment law at Butzel Long and concentrates her practice primarily in the areas of employment law and commercial litigation. She represents employers in federal and state court litigation and before state and federal administrative agencies.

"It's important for our students to understand the reasons behind the laws so they can help their employers develop policies and procedures to keep them out of court," says Davies. "It's also the toughest parts of the PHR/SPHR exams,"she adds since she recently took the SPHR exam herself to become certified

"The reasons why HR people should come to Walsh to prepare for the PHR/SPHR exams are because the books and online tools provided by SHRM are supplemented with real-world discussion; the entire class is engaged since they are all working in the field; and we keep in touch with a variety of ongoing professional education opportunities," concludes Davies.
