Pierce selected as Hawks’ new AD [The Free Lance-Star, Fredericksburg, Va.]
May 13--Roger Pierce headed to a career in administration after he coached his final football game at Stafford High School in 2005.
But even though Pierce enjoyed his four years as an assistant principal at Rodney Thompson Middle School and one at Brooke Point, there was something missing: Pierce missed being a part of athletics.
He'll get the opportunity to rejoin the athletic arena after being named Brooke Point's new athletic director.
Pierce, 48, replaces Greg Margheim, who took the same position at Mountain View.
"It's something that I kind of missed the last couple of years," Pierce said of being around athletics. "This seemed like the perfect fit."
HAIRSTON ON TEAM USA
Former Courtland basketball star Josh Hairston is one of 21 players who has been named to the United States men's 18-Under team.
Twelve of those players will represent the USA at the FIBA Americas Championship, June 26-30 in San Antonio, Texas. Oklahoma head coach Jeff Capel, a former Duke guard, has been named the team's head coach.
"It's a great feeling to know I'm going to put that jersey on and it's going to say USA," Hairston said.
CAVS OFFER FROHNAPFEL
Colonial Forge junior tight end Eric Frohnapfel has received a full scholarship offer from Virginia, Eagles head coach Bill Brown said.
Frohnapfel already held an offer from West Virginia.
Brown said Frohnapfel's twin, junior quarterback Blake, has a scholarship offer from Division I-AA Bryant University.
Brown added that Eagles' junior wide receiver/defensive back Tim Scott recently picked up an offer from East Carolina. Scott already had offers from Maryland, West Virginia and North Carolina.
Brown said none of his players will make a decision soon.
FIRST OFFER FOR WILDCAT
Mountain View junior wide receiver Anthony Johnson has picked up a scholarship offer from Richmond. The two-time All-Area performer registered 98 receptions for 1,587 yards and 13 touchdowns the past two seasons.
BROOKS STAYS IN-STATE
Courtland senior basketball standout Kyle Brooks will play for Bridgewater College, Cougars head coach J.T. Nino said.
Brooks will become the fifth player from Courtland's 2009 state championship team to play in college. He was a first-team all-Battlefield District selection this past season. He was also second-team All-Area.
HAWKS' RUNNER HONORED
Brooke Point senior cross country standout Katherine Walker is one of 10 student-athletes in Virginia to receive the Allstate/Virginia High School League Achievement Award scholarship.
Walker, who was honored for Group AAA girls, won the Northwest Region championship in the fall.
