Parking Ticket An Unwelcome Sight Insurance, Health Woes Thankful For Denlinger Red Rose Run 'Tweaks' Holistic Approach Respect For Veterans More Than One History Example Of Inefficiency

On a recent Friday night, I had planned to visit Marion Court for some music and cocktails. After a thunderstorm washed out that idea, our group decided to have dinner at the new Brickyard Restaurant, Fat Pigs. After a very nice dinner, I returned to my car to find it ticketed.

While I did misread the sign, and take responsibility for the mistake, is this how Lancaster attempts to revitalize the downtown area?

I was parked in an area zoned for parking in a designated neighborhood permit. I was parked on Prince Street, almost directly in front of the Brickyard. Having been a lifelong Lancaster County resident, I know there aren't any houses on this part of Prince Street.

I will tell you, if this is how the police treat all of their visitors, then good luck to you in trying to make the city thrive again.

I have to say, the new health care system is awful. When someone that can not breath is not allowed to be admitted to a hospital something is wrong. All because their oxygen level is OK, blood work is OK, X-rays look OK, but can not breath, that is not a good enough reason to be admitted.

Obviously there is something not right, and they need to run more tests to find out what is wrong. Even the doctor's office is complaining because they can't get tests run for people who need them.

Having health insurance is no good if no one can use it. I believe it is wrong that now the insurance companies can dictate what a person (that they have no contact with) needs or doesn't need. I really thought that is why you go to the doctors. We pay a lot for insurance but get little in return.</p>

I'm also fighting insurance because they are not paying for a co- pay for pre-screening work. It is a shame that we can't get what we pay for. Insurance companies need to stay out of our care and trust that the doctors are doing what is best for the patient.

Looking back on the state Senate race in the 36th District, I believe Rep. Gordon Denlinger deserves gratitude and commendation from the voters for the way he conducted himself and his campaign.

In an answer to God's calling, Rep. Denlinger left his secure house seat, not because he saw it as some sort of political promotion. Instead, he remained tenacious in his run against the political machine because he felt that it was his calling. This is a mark of dignity.

But perhaps in what became the theme of the race, Rep. Denlinger ran his campaign in a way that truly represented his Christian faith. He left the political rhetoric behind, remained consistent in his beliefs and refused to stoop to the level of mudslinging between opponents we so often see in the public realm.

To me, this is a powerful message to young voters like myself. Denlinger demonstrated that a run for public office does not have to follow the paradigm of political games and personal attacks. For this, I say thank you to Rep. Denlinger. Perhaps if future campaigns can follow his example, we can achieve much more uplifting and honorable public dialogue as we choose our leaders.

A few observations concerning the Red Rose Run held on June 7.

1.) To run an 8-inch photo of the overall male winner and not even run a small photo of the overall female winner, Leah Maher, is a major slight to all female runners.

2.) Only 10 port-a-potties with over 900 runners - not to mention spectators - obviously more are needed.

3.) I have participated in well over 100 races and I have never seen the top overall winners announced last at an awards ceremony - like an afterthought. The overall first, second and third place finishers should be recognized first.

The Red Rose Run is a wonderful Lancaster City tradition, and with a few tweaks, it will continue to be one.

Global warming, climate change and extreme weather adaptation are phrases that can evoke fear. With so many competing places to put our concern, such as jobs and food costs, fear doesn't seem to be focusing a common will to slow the exhaustion of our environment.

In a newsletter on restorative justice, indigenous leaders enjoined others to consider the first people's worldview, embracing the natural world as a relative and continuously nurturing the natural world within us.

This holistic attitude inspires deep affection for and preservation of the whole of life in its interconnectedness. When we develop an attachment to the intricate and balancing cycles of nature's supply and demand, we learn careful pacing and cooperation with this continuously providing resource.

Such affection is cultivated by being in daily communion with all wonders of nature - great and small: lithium deposits from which our batteries are supplied, honey bees and their exquisite combs, castoffs from food that break down to enrich soil, rainwater on our skin.

In recognizing that we are integrally of the Earth, we understand our endurance and thriving depends on protecting it. Awake to our membership in this ecology, even if we would, we couldn't despoil the Earth of which we are a part; our will is united.

After reading the letter "Did Aument win?" by Freda Conner (June 3), I feel compelled to respond.

The writer points out that long hours are required for the position of state senator. She also compares Gordon Denlinger's career as a CPA to that of Aument. She also states we should consider a candidate's station in life and the wisdom gained from life and career experience.

First, let me point out that Rep. Aument is serving his second term as state representative and has been putting in the long hours as a public servant.

Second, Mr. Aument upon leaving the military worked as a production supervisor in the private sector and was responsible for maintaining a strict budget and increasing efficiency.

Third, as far as wisdom gained from life and career experiences, I want a man or woman to represent me who has proven their worth. Mr. Aument graduated from the military college the Citadel and was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Army. He commanded an infantry combat company of 150 with meritorious service while engaging the enemy.

He also showed his leadership and public service when in 2009 he traveled to the Central African Republic and conducted training with government officials and community leaders on ethics in government and labor.

She mentions Mrs. Aument missing the support of the day-to-day care of the children. How about the military families who cope and sacrifice every day while their spouses are deployed for long periods of time all over the world, who are defending are freedom and liberty?

It is the bias of this writer and like-minded individuals that can hold our veterans back. They have served with honor, pride, dedication and loyalty. Show them respect and a chance to prove their worth. We need more veterans involved in the public and private sector.

Did Aument win? Because of his life and career experience, you bet. We all have.

I was reading the Jane Holahan review of Leslie Stainton's new memoir history of the Fulton Opera House ("A memoir takes the stage," Sunday News, June 8). I wanted to alert your readers that there is another excellent history of the Fulton Opera House written by my husband, Ty Greiner. His work is titled "A History of Professional Entertainment at the Fulton Opera House: 1852-1930."

It was written to receive his masters degree in theater from Penn State. Packed with insight about the Fulton's place in theater history, it contains many fascinating anecdotes about the performers who played there. It is a wonderful read for theater historians and the lay reader alike. The two-volume history is located in the LancasterHistory.org library at their President Avenue headquarters.

This is in response to Thomas J. Hayden's letter ("Postal Service aids 'buddy,'" June 17), where he defends a union postal employee having to be driven around to complete his daily route.

Only in a union environment is it more efficient for two employees to do the job of one. It's no coincidence that unions make up less than 20 percent of the American workforce.
