Ohio Optometrists Partner With Federal Legislators and Local Mayors in Improving Infant Eye and Vision Care

COLUMBUS, Ohio, May 16, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Due to the overwhelming number of children with eye and vision problems across the United States, Ohio optometrists are devoting appointments to no-cost, comprehensive eye and vision assessments for infants between six to 12 months of age through InfantSEE®.

InfantSEE®, a public health program developed by Optometry Cares® - The AOA Foundation and Vistakon, Johnson & Johnson Vision Care, Inc., was designed to provide professional eye care for infants nationwide at no-cost, regardless of family income or number of eligible children.

United States Senators representing Ohio expressed their support for the InfantSEE® program.

"When a vision-impaired infant wears a pair of glasses or receives much needed eye-care, a world of possibility appears," said Senator Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio). "That's why the AOA Foundation's work is so important for Ohio families seeking to create a better life for their children. The Ohio InfantSEE® Campaign improves the quality of life for Ohioans and can help create a better future."

"I hope as many Ohioans as possible take advantage of this program, which is providing a no-cost alternative for detection of eye and vision problems in infants across Ohio," said Senator Rob Portman (R-OH).

Leading members of the United State House of Representatives offered their support for the InfantSEE® program as well.

"Early eye and vision assessments are essential to a child's healthy development and I encourage all Ohio families with young children to take advantage of the InfantSEE® program," said Representative Pat Tiberi (R-Columbus).  "I also commend Ohio's optometrists for providing their time and service, as well as the American Optometric Association and the Vision Care Institute, for providing access to free eye health assessments to help provide children the best start in life."

"An infant's vision and eye health are crucial components in a child's development, and early detection of problems, especially during the first year of life, is very important," said Representative Tim Ryan (D-Youngstown, Warren). "InfantSEE® is a great program for our babies, and I encourage all parents to take advantage of this free eye assessment."

To help protect infant vision and eye health, Mayor Sue Lesch of Norwalk, Ohio and Mayor Don Patterson of Kettering, Ohio declared May 14th through May 21st InfantSEE® Week in Ohio.

One in 10 infants is at risk from undiagnosed eye and vision problems, which, if undetected, could lead to permanent vision impairment, and in rare cases, life-threatening health risks.  However, only 14 percent of children from infancy to age six have had a comprehensive eye assessment from an eye care professional, according to the American Optometric Association's Pediatric Eye and Vision study.In Ohio, great strides are being made to ensure that potential eye and vision problems are detected early. Infant eye assessments have been available in Ohio since the InfantSEE® program launched in 2005.

"Many parents are surprised to learn that the first year of life is one of the most critical stages of a child's visual development," said Dr. Douglas Ryen, an Ohio optometrist and InfantSEE® provider. "It's the ideal time to detect eye and vision problems before these conditions worsen or cause developmental delays."

Recently, Dr. Ryen discovered firsthand why InfantSEE® assessments are so beneficial. Dr. Ryen performed a routine exam on his 8-month-old daughter, Isla, and discovered she needed glasses to address a vision problem, which if left undiagnosed could have developed into amblyopia (lazy eye) over time.

"It's difficult for anyone, including professional eye doctors, to notice vision problems in infants without a thorough eye exam," said Dr. Ryen. "Even if a child is hitting all their developmental milestones and not showing any signs of problems, there could still be something wrong with their vision. Identifying problems and beginning treatment as early as possible is important."

The InfantSEE® program launched in 2005 with support from former President Jimmy Carter, honorary national spokesperson. To date, more than 8,800 optometrists nationwide volunteer their time to provide assessments to babies in their communities.  The majority of vision problems detected include severe hyperopia (farsightedness), myopia (nearsightedness), congenital glaucoma and congenital cataract.  A less common vision problem that can also be detected during an infant's comprehensive eye assessment includes retinoblastoma (eye cancer).

In an effort to ensure healthy vision and eye health in Ohio infants, parents can bring their infant for a no-cost assessment at InfantSEE® public events in Cleveland and Toledo.
