SHOP SMART FOR HEALTH INSURANCE

States News Service

The following information was released by the Michigan State Government:

The Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) reminds Michiganders to exercise caution when shopping for health insurance, especially online or in response to unsolicited marketers.

"Health insurance protects your health, your finances, and your future when life takes an unexpected turn," said DIFS Director Anita Fox. "When shopping for coverage, it is important to use the Health Insurance Marketplace or an insurance agent or company that you have verified is licensed. By being vigilant and carefully reviewing policy documents, you can help ensure you are signing up for coverage that you can count on when you need it."

Only licensed insurance companies and agents are authorized to sell insurance in Michigan, so it is important to verify a company's legitimacy before making a purchase. Michiganders can purchase comprehensive health plans through the federal Health Insurance Marketplace, by contacting a licensed health insurance company directly, or by working with a licensed insurance agent. Using DIFS' Licensee Locator tool, allows consumers to verify that they are dealing with properly licensed individuals and businesses in the insurance industry.

How Can I Purchase Health Insurance Coverage?

Health insurance can be purchased during the annual open enrollment period that begins November 1 each year or through a special enrollment period that is triggered by a qualifying life event, such as losing your current coverage or a change in your family. Consumers may enroll through the Health Insurance Marketplace at HealthCare.gov or by calling 800-318-2596.

Additional options for purchasing health insurance include enrolling through an employer plan, through a college or university you attend, or through Medicare or Medicaid if you qualify. For Medicare assistance, call 800-663-4227 or visit Medicare.gov. For Medicaid, contact MI Bridges at 800-975-7630 or visit www.michigan.gov/mibridges.

If you need help purchasing health insurance, you can seek assistance from a federally trained navigator or certified application counselor by visiting LocalHelp.HealthCare.gov, or from a licensed insurance agent using DIFS' Insurance Licensee Locator.

What should you consider when looking at health plans?

When shopping for health insurance, DIFS highly encourages Michiganders to review their coverage needs and shop around to find a plan that meets their needs and budget.

Before signing up for a policy, read all the details carefully or review with an insurance agent to ensure you understand your policy language and terms of coverage. If enrolling online, check for disclaimers like "this is not insurance" or "does not meet Minimum Essential Coverage" to ensure you are getting the comprehensive insurance coverage you expect.

DIFS is here to help consumers with questions about insurance policies, coverage options, or filing complaints against insurers. To learn more or to get assistance, visit Michigan.gov/DIFS or call 877-999-6442, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The mission of the Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services is to ensure access to safe and secure insurance and financial services fundamental for the opportunity, security, and success of Michigan residents, while fostering economic growth and sustainability in both industries. In addition, the Department provides consumer protection, outreach, and financial literacy and education services to Michigan residents. Translation services are available for individuals with limited English proficiency who contact the Department. For more information, visit Michigan.gov/DIFS or follow the Department on Facebook, X, or LinkedIn.
