Northern State sweeps Crookston

American News, Aberdeen, S.D.
By American News, Aberdeen, S.D.
McClatchy-Tribune Information Services

April 07--Northern State swept Minnesota-Crookston in an NSIC doubleheader on Sunday in Redfield.

The Wolves took game one 9-2 and the second game 9-3.

Danny Fischer, Robbie Rocamora and Matt Stubbs all smacked home runs on Sunday. Rocamora's came in the second inning of game one. Rocamora hit a towering shot to straight-away center field that scored Trevor Sporrer. Stubbs' homer was a grand slam that came in NSU's five-run fifth inning and busted the game wide open for the Wolves. Stubbs brought in Eric O'Bryan, Clayton Nutting and Nate Russell with the slam. Fischer's came in the third inning of game two and it was big for Northern as it got the Wolves offense going in game two and cut the Minnesota, Crookston lead down to 2-1.

Alex Cornwell and Stubbs each collected three hits on the day and scored three runs in the sweep while Sporrer went 4-of-6 on the day and drove in four runs. Stubbs also collected four RBI in the doubleheader. In all, the Wolves collected 17 hits in the two games.

The Wolves (12-10, 6-6 NSIC) controlled much of the opening game and were never really threatened but game two was a different story as the Golden Eagles put two runs on the board in the first inning to take their first lead of the day.

After Fischer's homer, the Wolves tied the game at 2-2 in the fourth as Derek Tymesen brought home Cornwell. Sporrer brought home Cornwell again to give NSU a 3-2 lead in the sixth inning and the Wolves wouldn't look back as they collected six insurance runs in the seventh to build a 9-2 lead. Sporrer and Buddy Traxler each delivered two RBI's in the inning.

James Georgakas saw his first career action for the Wolves in game two and was huge in relief picking up the win. Georgakas pitched four innings and allowed one run on four hits after coming into the ballgame tied at 2-2. Cody Johns got the start for the Wolves and pitched five innings, struck out four and allowed two earned off eight hits.

Colton Boucher improved to 3-2 on the year as he got the win in the first game for Northern. Boucher earned his third complete game of the season as he went the distance allowing two runs on eight Golden Eagle hits. Boucher also recorded four strikeouts and just one walk in the victory.

NSU will play Crookston today in Redfield. The doubleheader will start at noon.
