Monumental Life Settlement Scholarship Recipients Announced

TOPEKA, Kan., June 3 -- The Kansas Department of Insurance issued the following news release:

Seven Kansas college students are recipients of $1,000 each for fall semester 2013 financial aid from the Monumental Life Settlement African-American Scholarship program administered by the Kansas Insurance Department.

The students are Stephonn Alcorn, Gardner, attending the University of Kansas; Joyce Banks, Topeka, Friends University; Victoria Gordon, Overland Park, Ottawa University; Rashaun Herah, Overland Park, Emporia State University; Kamika Hicks, Wichita, Wichita State University; Solomon Lartey, Lawrence, University of Kansas; and Dajon Medlock, Park City, Wichita State University.

The recipients were chosen by a judges' panel of insurance department personnel and community volunteers. Because of the number of applicants for this semester's scholarship, a seventh recipient was added.

"We are honored to assist these students in their college efforts," said Sandy Praeger, Commissioner of Insurance. "Their applications were outstanding."

The scholarship money comes from a legal settlement involving a national discrimination suit filed for African-Americans against Monumental Life Insurance Company. The Kansas settlement money was approved by the Kansas Legislature for distribution to college students through the insurance department scholarship program.

The department has one more round of scholarships available for the spring 2014 semester. Current recipients as well as new applicants can apply. The application deadline for the spring 2014 semester is Oct. 1, 2013.
