Man says 65 grams of pot were mostly for his personal use

Sept. 26--CRESTVIEW -- Okaloosa County Sheriff's deputies didn't expect to find a gun and more than 60 grams of marijuana when they made a traffic stop in Crestview.

They pulled over 25-year-old Kyle Stephen Kurpil on Sept. 13 after he crossed the fog line six times in two miles, according to the arrest report. When the deputy went to ask for license, registration and insurance, he noted an odor of marijuana and the smell of alcohol.

Kurpil was asked to perform standardized field sobriety tests and agreed, the report said. He admitted he'd been drinking at Split Oaks Saloon.

He completed the tests successfully and the deputy asked about the smell of marijuana, according to the report. He denied knowing anything about the smell.

A search found a total of 65 grams of marijuana, a scale, a box of plastic bags and a 9 mm semi-automatic handgun in the vehicle, the report said. The gun was loaded with seven rounds of ammunition.

After being arrested, Kurpil said the items belonged to him and that the majority of the marijuana was for personal use, according to the report. He would not elaborate.

He is charged with using or displaying a firearm during a felony, possession of marijuana with intent to sell, manufacture or deliver and possession or use of drug paraphernalia.

His next scheduled court date is Oct. 21.
