Man arrested for meth lab at Mill Creek

Martha Sparks, The Logan Banner, W.Va.

McClatchy-Tribune Information Services

Aug. 17--A Chapmanville man was booked on Aug. 10 for a variety of charges, including operating a meth lab.

According to the complaint, West Virginia State Troopers R.E. Stowers and M.J. Miller traveled to a residence on Mill Creek in an attempt to serve a felony warrant that had been issued on March 18 on William Kenneth Burgess, 36, of Chapmanville.

Officers were advised by the owner of the residence, Stephanie Burgess, that Burgess was inside and hidden in the attic. Burgess did not respond to verbal commands to exit the attic, so Troopers physically pulled Burgess down from the attic. Burgess reportedly attempted to strike the officers with his feet several times, one of which did strike Trooper Miller.

The warrant was issued after members of the U.S. 119 Task Force visited a camper belonging to Burgess on Feb. 28 in reference to a possible meth lab. Officers report that when the female inside opened the door, there was a can of Draino sitting on top of a can of Coleman fuel in plain sight. They could also detect the smell of methamphetamine coming from inside the camper. Officers report that Draino and Coleman Fuel are key ingredients in making meth. A search warrant was obtained and executed and officers found other items used in the process.

Burgess was charged with operate or attempt clandestine drug lab, obstructing, battery and two counts of assault. His bail was set at $30,000.

Stephanie Burgess was also charged on Aug. 10 for obstructing and giving false information. Her bail was set at $1,000.
