According to Aviva, more than £110 million was lost due to a rising number of bogus claims by frauds. Aviva also says that organized gangs are staging car crashes for the sole purpose of getting money from the insurance companies. Fraudsters often do this by deliberately slamming on the brakes, so that the driver behind them crashed into them, unable to avoid the collision. Aviva reports that there is more than 5,500 suspicious injury claims being put under investigation. The head of fraud at Aviva, Tom Gardner, estimated that cases like these increase everyone's insurance premium at least another £50. "We are witnessing a trend toward third party, injury and organized fraud. For example, in 2013, we identified fraud in one in nine third party injury claims", he said.
