Americans for Prosperity-New Hampshire (AFP-NH) today commends the House for rejecting SB 498, a misguided proposal that would have created a new insurer assessment scheme and shifted costs onto Granite State families through higher health insurance premiums.
The legislation would have established a dangerous precedent by empowering a new nonprofit entity to collect mandatory assessments from insurerscosts that ultimately would have been passed on to consumers.
AFP-NH Deputy State Director Sarah Scott said:
"SB 498 would have created a new funding mechanism that functioned like a tax on families and small businesses who are already struggling with rising health care costs. The state should begin a process of completely reevaluating how we deliver effective care to children, including behavioral health issues, bringing the Department of Health and Human Services, health insurers, and clinicians together to find a long-term solution that meets everyone's needs in the future.
"AFP-NH applauds the House for rejecting this proposal and standing up for New Hampshire families, workers, and employers who cannot afford another cost increase."
