List made public on Keenum’s restitution [Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal, Tupelo]

Jan. 08--Former Booneville attorney Thomas Keenum must pay more than $1 million in restitution, a federal judge ordered recently.

Keenum, 73, was sentenced Dec. 30 to 22 months in prison on one count of federal bank fraud.

U.S. District Judge W. Allen Pepper Jr. also ordered him to repay five banks, three insurance companies and Booneville attorney Duncan Lott.

Keenum, once a prominent business attorney, admitted that he used as loan collateral a piece of property already obligated elsewhere.

In the 2008 charges against him, prosecutors accused him of three-year fraud in which he lied to another attorney, who signed title opinions on property to Keenum used as collateral on bank loans.

Made public Thursday is the list of payees to which $1,083,121.41 restitution is ordered including:

--Community Bank North of Tupelo -- $110,317.43

--BancorpSouth, Tupelo -- $157,091.15

--Community Spirit Bank, Belmont -- $266,872.62

--Peoples Bank of Ripley -- $123,581.96

--Allied World Assurance Co., Farmington, Conn. -- $75,000

--CNA Insurance, Chicago, Ill. -- $287,219 and

--Great American Insurance Co. of Richardson, Texas -- $37,500

The court also ordered him to repay Lott $10,000.

Free on bond, Keenum is scheduled to report to prison before 2 p.m.Feb. 27. The U.S. Bureau of Prisons will inform him about the facility.

He also permanently surrendered his law license.
